XAL Light Magazine 20 - HULT International Business School

After London, Boston, Shanghai, and Dubai, the HULT School Of Business has now also opened a campus in San Francisco’s sophisticated banking district, in order to give local students of economics the most solid and contemporary education possible. The vision of the institute’s management for the new campus was to give students a place to study that was good to work in, but which simultaneously reflected the school’s progressive attitude. Perhaps hardly anywhere was better suited for this than Levi’s Plaza, one of the liveliest places in an otherwise extremely vibrant city.

Since the building opened its doors there in August 2010 after costly renovations, it has been a combined training and communications centre to an international clientele from a total of 129 countries, and completely redefines the concept of the business school as we understand it. It was decided early in the planning process to leave the naked concrete honeycombs of the ceiling cladding, because it was thought that they would be ideally suited for accentuating service and design. And that’s exactly how it is: in the central areas, lighting strips of various lengths and intensity not only provide the necessary brightness, but also directly illuminate the floor and ceiling to make the contrast between material nakedness and colourful opulence, and help the spaces to achieve a modern and sophisticated presence. In contrast to this, the round lights, which are arranged in different, occasionally random patterns, are used to strictly define separated spaces, especially offices and auditoriums,
and use clean, clear light to give them a radiant and creative aura.

Sustaining Businesses, Creating Jobs

“TSAO Design Group has completed projects with a number of high-profile clients, but Mr.Tsao said two of his proudest accomplishments would not have been possible without a supplier diversity connection. The first was the remodeling of the Asian Art Museum while it resided in Golden Gate Park. The second supplier diversity project was the Westfield San Francisco Center, where Bloomingdales is the anchor for four floors of high-end retail, restaurant, entertainment and office tenants. Both projects won numerous design awards.”

Eco-structure - SenSpa

“San Francisco-based SenSpa is a day spa that bases every skin and body treatment on the power of three paths: release, restore and revitalize.

The owner’s renovation of the historic landmark for the spa’s home followed similar guidelines. Located within the Presidio, which is designated a National Historic Landmark District and National Park, the spas interior has been adopted into a fully weather tight and healthy structure that is Asian inspired.”

HOME Miami - Something Out of Africa

“As part of a total renovation by TSAO DesignGroup, completed in tribute to the homeowner’s late partner, the upstairs guest bath of the 1925 Mediterranean beauty off Arthur Godfrey Road in Miami Beach was transformed into a thrill ride from the banks of the Nile. The pattern mosaic wall and ceiling tiles are from Italian manufacturer Biazza Mosaico’s Urban Safari Collection.”

VM+SD - SenSpa

“A fusion of East and West, the 13,000-square-foot day spa follows the principles of feng shui - balancing earth elements of femininity and masculinity - mixed with modern furniture, colors and fixtures. ‘There are five or six different experiences in there,’ says Luxottica’s King, ’ It was a very thoughtful application of materials.’ Eco-friendly resources, such as cork flooring in the treatment rooms and bamboo millwork, add to the Eastern sensibility.”

Home & Design - Piece of History

“The Miami Beach house built in 1925 had arches, decorative beams, original hardwood floors, handsome doors—and plenty of flaws. Structural flaws like corroding concrete. The old-fashioned jalousies—slim panes of glass so popular in pre-air-conditioned South Florida—were holding up walls merely out of habit. It cost Frank Conte $90,000 just to replace the concrete…”

American Spa - Sensational

“The spa, which is situated in a renovated World War I army barrack, features 14 rooms including two VIP rooms and two couples’ suites. The design combines Eastern influences, modern furnishings, and elements of the barrack original structure. Guests are also encouraged to enjoy the spa far beyond the treatment room in three relaxation areas, which make up about 60 percent of the total space, something that wellness-minded spa founders felt was imperative even though the areas don’t generate revenue. The private SenSpace offers lounge chairs and a floor-to-ceiling cylindrical fireplace.”

Day Spa - Reception Perceptions

“Have you ever heard the expression, ‘There are no second chances to make a first impression?’ Nowhere does this apply more than the service industry, especially when it comes to designing a proper reception area.”

Contract - The Comforts of Home

“The overriding goal was to leave the house’s previous look and feel behind in favor of a more calming environment. The original aesthetic was filled with lots of children’s references, felt very childlike, and was loud and expressive…”

“Witness last year’s winner, designed by TSAO Design Group: a huge cube . strung with nearly a thousand silber-bead chains (like the ones you pull to operate a ceiling fam), its center cut into a cone tall enough to walk into, the whole thing shimmying like a showgirl.”
